VOLUNTEERING

Philas Volunteers

  The Philatelic Association of NSW, Inc. (Philas) offers the opportunity for people who have an interest in stamp collecting to assist in the administration of our hobby.  This administration is conducted entirely by volunteers, who freely give of their time in their pursuit of advancing their hobby.  For retired collectors, time spent at Philas House can be a day out communing with like-minded people.

  Philas House is the home of Philately in NSW and is located at 17 Brisbane Street, Darlinghurst, just off Oxford Street; only two blocks east of Museum Railway Station.  The philatelic activities in this building occupy three floors; the ground floor consisting of office, storage and work areas; the first floor has meeting rooms and a  kitchen and the second floor hosts a well stocked philatelic library.

Key Volunteer Tasks

  • Reception - answering the telephone, greeting and directing visitors, and other office tasks;

  • General Office Duties - Photocopying, typing, data entry, computer work;

  • Philas Auctions - we need assistance with lotting and describing the material for auction. We also need help with viewing the auction lots; plus data entry for the control and administration of the auction. This latter task requires experience with either Microsoft Access or Excel software packages;

  • Philas Publicity Officer - Publicises activities of the Association, including Open Days and Auctions, plus any other activity with which Philas is associated;

  • Data entering - capable volunteers are needed to assist with the production of the Philas Stamp Auction Catalogue at Philas House on either Tuesdays or Saturdays. This will involve scanning stamps, editing images and preparing the layout of the auction catalogue.

  •   Training will be provided in the following: Access Database entering; Adobe Photoshop Elements; scanning and MS Publisher.

  •   Ideally volunteers will have an eye for detail and have some knowledge of computers. If you are interested and enjoy dabbling in desktop publishing - this may be a great outlet for your creativity. Phone Bill at Philas on 9264 8301 (Tuesday or Saturday) to make a booking for an interview to learn more about this opportunity.

We always need more people to help:

  • Catering - help in the kitchen, making lunches for volunteers, and helping at functions;

  • Stores - looking after stationery supplies, making up “goodies” bags and club packs;

  • Philas Library - general library duties.

Hours

  The normal times when Philas House is open are on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9.00 am to 3.30 pm.  Philas will also be open at other times during auction viewing or for special philatelic functions.
